Common Types of Bearings

Common Types of Bearings

Bearings are generally split into Rolling-element bearings (using balls or rollers) and Plain bearings.
• Deep Groove Ball Bearings: The most common type, featuring a simple design with spherical balls.
o Usage: Electric motors, household appliances, and automotive wheels. They handle both radial and moderate axial loads.
• Roller Bearings: Instead of balls, these use cylinders.
o Cylindrical: Handle very high radial loads but minimal axial loads; used in heavy machinery and conveyor belts.
o Tapered: Shaped like a cone; used in vehicle wheel hubs to handle combined heavy radial and axial loads.
o Needle: Very thin rollers for applications with limited radial space, like gearboxes.
• Thrust Bearings: Designed specifically to handle loads acting in the same direction as the shaft (axial).
o Usage: Steering mechanisms in cars and heavy-duty swivel chairs.
• Spherical Bearings: Features a curved outer ring that allows for shaft misalignment.
o Usage: Large-scale industrial gearboxes and mining equipment where shafts might flex.
. Usage Comparison Table
Bearing Type Primary Load Type Common Application
Ball Bearing Radial & Light Axial Ceiling fans, Skateboards, Small Motors
Tapered Roller Heavy Radial & Axial Car Wheel Axles, Agricultural Machinery
Needle Roller Radial (Space-saving) Two-wheeler Engines, Transmissions
Thrust Ball Pure Axial Rotary tables, Drilling Rigs
Spherical Roller High Radial + Misalignment Wind Turbines, Paper Mills
